on not half-assing it (the william morris project)

i bought a rug!

not just any rug but the exact rug that i wanted.

i kept talking about rugs and showing brian pictures of rugs and i kept sighing over and showing him the same picture of an ikea rug that i adored.  for christmas the clever boy gave me a gift card with the thought that i could have a girl's day and pick out whatever i wanted - most probably the rug.

but although way back in january i did have a wonderful girl's day the only thing i came home with was a set of photo cards taking a whopping four dollars off of my gift card.  four down, one hundred and ninety-six to go.  the location i went to did not have the rug i wanted and at that time i was unwilling to compromise.

i wanted my rug.

far too often i compromise.  i compromise on style because i think i will never find a style i love.  i compromise on quality because i think i cannot afford any better.  i compromise because i am unwilling to return at another time and i just need something, anything, so i'll just take this for now.

too small, too big, poor quality - for whatever reason it is not suitable and does not make me happy and in the long run it is a waste because for my lack of patience to simply wait until i have enough money, or wait until i find a style i love, or wait until the store has it in stock i am cheating myself out of an item that meets the william morris criteria of;
"have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"

this time around i made the trip to ikea during a quiet afternoon and was able to spend time in the rug room simply browsing and ensuring myself that my chosen rug was indeed a style i could love for some time and of decent quality.  it was.  the quandry then became the size - the size i could "afford" was forty dollars less than the size that i knew would work the best in our living area.

so, instead of backing down and spending only what i had on my gift card i juggled numbers around in my brain and realized that with some sacrifice and a little extra work i could indeed afford the extra money it would cost to bring home the item that would make me happy for the long haul, instead of just for the moment of "well, i got something, anyway".

i even chose to bring home one of those underpads for an extra ten dollars which i am so very pleased with.  for an extra hours work i am now secure in knowing that i will not be spending a good chunk of my day smoothing out wrinkles from the rug.  and more smoothing of the wrinkles.  and  more.

i am determined that from now on i am not half-assing it.  and i am now believing the new rug to be both useful and beautiful.

thrifty wish list - for the home

all images TARGET.COM

i have been a good girl and have not been thrifting in some time.  instead, inspired by THE WILLIAM MORRIS PROJECT and the list i created to help me feel less overwhelmed by all the to-dos and to-buys needed around the house i created a fun thrifting wish list to keep me on track and make wise choices while thrifting.  of course, one never knows what one will discover upon those shelves but hopefully this list will help keep me away from the dusty vinyl and instead searching for bright colours, quirky prints and quality pieces in the housewares department.

//a larger shoe basket is necessary for the entryway//cheerful prints and colours on dishes to compliment the solid white setting we currently use//a larger than a throw rug-smaller than a full size rug for under the dining room table would separate the living & dining areas and bring colour//proper sized curtains are A MUST for privacy and security//good quality towels with cute prints would justify finally purging the threadbare ones we currently use//a new shower curtain would just be nice//most of our bed linens are becoming worn and need to be replaced//i would like to find a small dish to corral brian's jewellery//

resolutions - spring check in

the last of the winter grey and the beginnings of spring brought some challenges and an equal number of successes.  following are some reflections on my 2013 resolutions.

  • wear skirts & dresses more often
yes!  and no.  i have had a few occasions to wear a skirt that i have and absolutely love but it's kind of formal.  like, job interview and funeral formal.  i intend to invest in some casual skirts and dresses more appropriate for everyday wear.
also, note to self: invest in shoes appropriate for wear with something other than denim.
  • keep regular haircut schedules
yes!  and no.  i am pleased to report that i have found a stylist that i am very comfortable with so that's something.  unfortunately haircuts are expensive, yo.  so good thing i look cute in hats.
  • tweet?  as in, join twitter?
no.  i really don't feel i'd use it enough to bother.  meh.
  • make proper pots of tea instead of just pouring hot water over a tea bag in a mug and then saving that tea bag in a shot glass on the stove to use for the next cup
  • or, at least choose a more attractive container for the used tea bag to rest in
fail on both counts.  old habits die hard.
  • paint the washroom
yes!!!!  we finally got the rental company to have a contractor come in and take care of our mold issue and freshly paint the new ceiling and walls.  he did a crap job though, so i'll now have to touch up the tile line and scrape the "mistakes" off the tile but IT'S PAINTED!!!!!  *cabbage patching in my pajamas*
  • get a fish
not yet.
  • host more parties
i hosted my first ever girl's night in this apartment and i am pretty sure it went well.  much hummus was consumed.  i am looking forward to hosting upcoming dinner parties.
  • fix the laptop to enable skype to chat with lu
not yet.  it's so expensive.  i think i am probably just going to let this one tell me it is ready to go to computer heaven and then invest in a new one.  sorry, girl.
  • visit my grandmother more
i am a horrible person.
  • invest in new tupperware, the old ones are manky
this is probably the easiest one and i haven't done it yet.  what is wrong with me?!?!

THIS SPRING I RESOLVE TO...
  • spend more time with family & friends
  • get outside more
  • continue to work with my psychologist on my anxiety and DO MY HOMEWORK
  • accept invitations
  • increase my income
did you make resolutions?  how are you making out?

march

THIS MONTH I...
  • shared some beautiful RABBIT THEMED PIECES found on etsy as an alternative to real bunnies as easter presents - because live bunnies are hard work but cozy sweatshirts and beautiful art is easy on the soul
  • assembled another fun LINKS I HEART post featuring goodness from around the interwebs
  • finally caved and purchased the VINTAGE ART that had been waiting for me at my favorite thrift
  • weighed the PROS & CONS of using a new reader when i made the switch to BLOGLOVIN
  • found a simple, inexpensive, attractive and practical way to store extra cutlery with a THRIFTED TIN
  • was rewarded for my good thrift etiquette with a GORGEOUS THROW PILLOW
  • took pen to paper and made a list inspired by THE WILLIAM MORRIS PROJECT

i also made my first visit to an actual target.  so, that happened.
